Responsibilities
Provides effective supervision of assigned staff, including selection,\nperformance management, employee relations, training, prioritizing, and\nassigning work and related activities.Coordinates all activities to maintain all County, parks and school grounds to\ninclude landscape areas, roadway maintenance, trails, parking areas, ball\ncourts, athletic fields, and stormwater facilities.Assists with the oversight of contracts and supports developing new contracts.Maintains computerized maintenance management system for the division,\nincluding scheduling preventive and corrective maintenance, and coordinates\nmaintenance and repair with external agencies.Reviews plans and specifications, recommends modifications to existing\ninfrastructure, and coordinates various maintenance projects.Promotes and ensures training, proper work site protection techniques, and\ncompliance with the County safety program and departmental safety procedures;\nensures equipment, materials, and work conditions are adequately maintained to\nprevent accidents. Conducts safety training as assigned; performs administrative\nduties including preparation of work logs, field and facility reports.Acts in the absence of Parks and Grounds Maintenance Superintendent.Performs other duties as assigned.Requirements
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate’s\ndegree; extensive experience in grounds maintenance work; considerable\nsupervisory experience; some coursework in landscape maintenance/design,\nathletic field maintenance, and stormwater facility maintenance preferred.Must possess or be able to obtain within 12 months of hire a valid Class A\nCommercial Driver’s License with airbrake and tanker endorsement and have an\nacceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.Must possess or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire a valid commercial\nVirginia Pesticide applicator license.Must possess or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire a valid certified\nfertilizer applicator license.Knowledge of operational and maintenance requirements of parks and grounds\nareas and equipment; the principles, practices and techniques of maintenance\nplanning, scheduling and coordinating; effective safety standards, procedures,\npractices and techniques pertaining to grounds maintenance and equipment; sport\nturf management for all types of athletic fields and ability to lay out athletic\nfields; knowledge of leadership techniques, principles and procedures to assign\nwork, schedule, supervise, train and evaluate the work of assigned staff.Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite.Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of staff and assist outside\norganizations; supervise maintenance projects; communicate effectively, both\norally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships\nwith all County employees and the public.Nice-to-haves
