About the Role
Join the Discovery Land Company family and become part of a mission to create one-of-a-kind environments where individuals and families can learn, grow, and play in some of the most beautiful places in the world. We're seeking a full-time Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join the Agronomy Department at The Hills, our exclusive community located in East Quogue, New York, beginning May 2026.
The Hills is a close-knit community of 110 residences in the heart of the Hamptons on Long Island's East End. As part of this prestigious development, you'll support the overall maintenance of our world-class Tom Fazio golf course and related equipment while working alongside a dedicated team committed to quality and service excellence.
## What You'll Do
### Golf Course Construction and Development
You'll support all site supervision on designated golf course construction projects, maintaining a safe, clean, and organized jobsite that reflects Discovery Builders Golf standards. Your role involves creating an environment of professionalism, respect, timeliness, and accountability among the project team. You'll maintain overall project schedules, manage self-perform labor and outside contractors, implement quality control measures, and coordinate closely with the project manager and Golf Course Superintendent. Material procurement tracking, ensuring schedule goals are met, punch list management, and turnover activities to ensure customer satisfaction will all be part of your responsibilities. You'll provide input on project schedules, input data into weekly reports for the project manager, and interact with clients to confirm schedule milestones and project methods.
### Golf Course Maintenance and Operations
Your maintenance responsibilities encompass all aspects of golf course upkeep, including mowing, fertilization, pest control, and irrigation management. You'll oversee the drainage, irrigation, and watering systems while developing and implementing comprehensive turf management programs to maintain optimal playing conditions year-round. Working closely with other departments, you'll ensure consistency across the overall project and development, particularly regarding landscape and grounds. You'll supervise all planting, fertilizing, and care of turf, plants, shrubs, trees, and other facilities on the course, maintaining it in proper playing condition at all times.
Staff management is a key component of this role. You'll recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate all personnel assigned to the department while maintaining accurate work records. Planning professional development and training activities for subordinates falls within your purview, as does conducting regular course inspections to identify areas for improvement and develop action plans accordingly.
Daily facility security checks, inventory management of equipment and keys, and supervision of the equipment repair shop are essential responsibilities. You'll maintain all grounds and course maintenance equipment, overseeing equipment maintenance and repair to ensure all machinery operates in proper working condition. Collaborating with golf course management on course improvement projects, maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities, expenses, and inventory, and keeping detailed schedules and records of all maintenance completed rounds out your operational duties.
Compliance matters significantly in this position. You'll ensure that chemicals, petroleum, and other controlled products are used, stored, and disposed of in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. You'll select and prepare proper fertilizers and nutrients for all flora and fauna while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and best practices for sustainable golf course management. Additionally, you'll implement and enforce a comprehensive safety program for employees, members, and guests on the course in compliance with all applicable laws.
You'll prepare and revise the grounds manual, keep members informed about current and future maintenance activities, and communicate with other departments as needed. Staying current with industry knowledge is important—you'll attend turf conferences, equipment shows, workshops, and other educational programs to maintain awareness of technical and turf innovations that could affect departmental operations. Regular attendance at staff and management meetings is expected.
## What We're Looking For
Minimum 3-5 years of experience in golf course maintenance is required, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. A bachelor's degree in turf management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field is preferred. You'll need strong knowledge of turfgrass species, irrigation systems, and golf course agronomy practices, and you should be well versed in all aspects of golf course construction and management of golf course construction personnel. A valid driver's license and pesticide applicator's license are essential, or you must have the ability to obtain one.
Beyond technical qualifications, we seek someone with a positive attitude and professional demeanor who demonstrates exceptional communication and interpersonal skills when delivering service to members, guests, and team members. You must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, with the understanding that long hours may be required due to business demands. The ability to work effectively in a team environment, remain calm and focused during busy periods, and read, write, speak, and understand English is essential—additional languages are preferred. Finally, you'll need to meet the physical demands of the position, including working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, standing, walking, and moving for periods greater than eight hours, and lifting and carrying items sometimes exceeding fifty pounds.
