About the Role
Bring Buchanan Back to Its Best Golf Ever
Skylinks at Buchanan Fields is looking for a Golf Course Superintendent to lead our grounds operation and drive the biggest agronomy push in this property's 70-year history.
This isn't a maintain-the-status-quo job. We bought a struggling muni in 2023 and turned it into one of the busiest golf properties in Northern California. Now we're investing back into the golf course itself — and we need the right person to own that transformation.
Our story, as featured on Golf.com: https://golf.com/travel/struggling-california-muni-saved-ruin/
The numbers that make this place different:
Established 1955 — original Robert Muir Graves design
64,927 rounds in 2025 (US course average: ~39,000)
16.5 million range balls hit in 2025 (US average: ~7.5 million)
One of the East Bay's true community golf hubs — leagues, juniors, events, seven days a week
Why This Role Is Different
A real project list, funded and ready. You won't be begging for budget to fix things. On the board right now:
Bentgrass nursery installation — build our own sod supply on site
Greens expansion — restoring all greens to their original Robert Muir Graves size and shape
Bunker renovation and drainage work
Irrigation optimization and water management
A running list of property-wide upgrade projects — we move fast and we actually execute
A growth path that goes somewhere. Skylinks is expanding to multiple locations. Get Buchanan to its best-ever condition, and this role grows into a Head of Agronomy position across the Skylinks portfolio. We're hiring for where the company is going, not just where it is today.
Ownership in the room. You'll work directly with an owner-operator who is on property, invests in the course, and backs the grounds team. Your input shapes capital decisions, not just mowing schedules.
Who We're Looking For
Two profiles fit this job:
The hungry Assistant Superintendent ready to step up, run their own course, and prove they can lead — with the licenses and drive to back it up.
The experienced Superintendent who still loves the craft and wants to help drive a business — someone who thinks about playability, presentation, AND revenue.
Either way, you're proactive. You see what needs doing before anyone asks. You take pride in conditions and you want your name on a turnaround.
What You'll Own
Full agronomic leadership — greens, tees, fairways, rough, range, and landscape across the entire property
Spray program — you'll hold the applicator license and run our pesticide/fertility program in-house, legally and by the book
Project execution — bentgrass nursery, greens expansion, bunkers, and the ongoing upgrade list
Crew leadership — inspire and develop a dedicated grounds team; build a positive, accountable culture
Mowing and maintenance programs — schedules, standards, and quality control across all surfaces
Irrigation management — system optimization, water conservation, and turf health
Budget and resources — manage the grounds budget, equipment needs, and vendor relationships
Communication — clear updates to ownership, coordination with the golf operation, and a visible, positive presence with our community of players
What You Bring
QAL or QAC (California Qualified Applicator License or Certificate) — REQUIRED at hire. You must be able to legally apply on site from day one.
Minimum 3 years as an Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent at a reputable course
Strong turfgrass management, plant health, and agronomic fundamentals
Irrigation systems knowledge and hands-on troubleshooting ability
Proven leadership — you can motivate a crew and hold a standard
Budget management and resource allocation experience
Problem-solver mentality — you find a way, you don't find excuses
Hands-on work ethic — this is a roll-up-your-sleeves property
Bonus points: greens construction/expansion experience, bentgrass management, project management on renovations, GCSAA membership
Compensation & Perks
$85,000 – $105,000/year, depending on experience
Full-time, year-round work at a financially strong, growing operation
Golf and range privileges
Direct path to Head of Agronomy as Skylinks expands to multiple locations
Work for owners who invest in the course — not a management company squeezing a lease
