About the Role
Overview
Reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent and serves as the primary operational and agronomic manager supporting daily course operations, turf health, environmental compliance, and staff performance. The Assistant Superintendent plays a key leadership role in planning, coordinating, and executing all maintenance programs to ensure championship-level playing conditions, regulatory compliance, and safe, efficient operations across all golf course assets. Weekend and Holiday work is required during the golf season.
Responsibilities
Operations & Leadership:
Serves as second-in-command for daily golf course maintenance operations.
Leads daily crew briefings, work planning, deployment, and productivity tracking.
Oversees quality control of all turf, landscape, bunker, irrigation, and facility maintenance work.
Directly supervises staff performance, training, safety compliance, and onboarding.
Assists with staffing schedules, overtime control, and seasonal workforce planning.
Acts as lead field decision-maker when the Superintendent is unavailable.
Works directly with professional staff, vendors, and customer-facing teams to ensure seamless operations.
Responds to play-condition concerns, operational issues, and emergency situations.
Represents maintenance operations in meetings, inspections, and site visits.
Agronomy & Turf Management:
Manages comprehensive turfgrass programs for greens, tees, fairways, roughs, native areas, and clubhouse grounds.
Management and handling of fertility, pesticide, and integrated pest management (IPM) programs using established Best Management Practices.
Maintains accurate chemical, fertilizer, and water-use compliance records.
Assists in monitoring and maintaining the irrigation system, identifies deficiencies, and coordinates repairs with the Superintendent, contractors, and equipment vendors.
Assists in maintaining compliance with applicable OSHA, EPA, DEP, and pesticide regulations and reporting requirements.
Conducts turf diagnostics and corrective action planning.
Directs mowing standards, heights of cut, rolling schedules, and seasonal cultural practices.
Oversees pump station operation, water conservation measures, and leak detection.
Leads safety training, equipment certification, and hazard mitigation.
Maintains documentation required for audits, inspections, and environmental reporting.
Equipment, Assets & Facilities:
Assists with preventative maintenance programs in coordination with the course mechanic.
Tracks fleet condition, replacement needs, and maintenance documentation.
Oversees snow removal and off-season maintenance programs.
Provides operational recommendations regarding equipment replacement, irrigation needs, and course improvement projects.
Projects, Budget & Capital Improvements:
Assists with budgeting, purchasing, inventory control, and vendor coordination.
Assists with the coordination and inspection of course improvement, renovation, and construction projects.
Monitors weather conditions and adjusts maintenance operations and course preparation activities accordingly.
Assists in preparing the golf course for tournaments, special events, and high-profile play.
Conducts routine inspections of course conditions and identifies corrective actions needed to maintain playing standards.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in golf course maintenance operations, including experience leading or supervising maintenance crews.
Associate's degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Possession of or ability to obtain a Massachusetts Commercial Applicator License within six (6) months of appointment.
Knowledge of golf course maintenance practices, turfgrass management principles, irrigation systems, fertilizer and pesticide application methods, and safe equipment operation.
Ability to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours during peak operating seasons and emergency situations.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and maintenance management software is preferred.
Valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
