About the Role
Position Overview
The Assistant Superintendent will work directly with the Superintendent and Director of Golf Course & Grounds in overseeing daily golf course maintenance operations, staff leadership, agronomic programs, irrigation management, and ongoing course development initiatives.
This position plays a critical role in maintaining championship-level conditioning standards while helping guide the continued transformation of Olde Eight.

Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Operations
- Assist in leading and training the Olde Eight grounds crew in daily maintenance operations
- Schedule and oversee daily assignments for groundskeepers and equipment operators
- Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, safety, and continuous improvement
- Conduct regular safety training and ensure adherence to operational standards
- Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for team members
- Assist with performance evaluations and ongoing staff development
- Support golf tournaments, member events, and special course setup needs
Turfgrass Management
- Assist in overseeing the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and practice areas
- Monitor and maintain championship-level playing conditions
- Diagnose and address turf health issues involving irrigation, nutrition, pests, and disease
- Participate in mowing, watering, fertilization, aeration, and cultural practices
- Implement agronomic programs aligned with seasonal and long-term course goals
Irrigation Management
- Assist in managing and maintaining the golf course irrigation system
- Perform irrigation scheduling, troubleshooting, repairs, and system adjustments
- Promote efficient and sustainable water management practices
- Coordinate irrigation needs alongside ongoing construction and development activities
Pesticide Application
- Safely apply pesticides in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
- Maintain accurate application records and follow all safety protocols
- Utilize Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices
- Obtain and maintain all required licensing and certifications
Course Development & Construction Support
- Work closely with leadership, contractors, architects, and vendors during ongoing development projects
- Assist with grow-in operations, turf establishment, soil preparation, and course enhancements
- Help coordinate maintenance priorities alongside active construction schedules
- Provide input on course conditioning and long-term agronomic planning
Equipment & Resource Management
- Assist in overseeing the care and maintenance of golf course equipment and tools
- Support inventory management and equipment organization
- Assist with budgeting and resource allocation related to course operations and projects

Qualifications
- Preferred degree in Agronomy, Turf Management, Horticulture, or related field
- 2–4 years of golf course maintenance experience preferred, ideally at a private club or high-end facility
- Experience with golf course construction, grow-ins, or renovation projects strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of turfgrass management practices and agronomic principles
- Working knowledge of irrigation systems and troubleshooting procedures
- Ability to obtain a South Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s License within six months of hire
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Willingness to work extended hours during peak seasons and project phases
