About the Role
Our client is seeking a passionate and experienced Lead Golf Course Superintendent to oversee the meticulous maintenance and presentation of our prestigious golf courses in Grand Rapids, Michigan, US . This is a hands-on role requiring a deep understanding of turfgrass management, agronomy, and the operational aspects of maintaining a world-class golf facility. You will lead a dedicated grounds crew, providing guidance, training, and performance management to ensure the highest standards are consistently met. Your responsibilities will include developing and executing comprehensive agronomic plans, managing irrigation systems, controlling pests and diseases, and overseeing course conditioning for optimal playability and aesthetics. This role demands strong leadership capabilities, excellent organizational skills, and a keen eye for detail. You will be responsible for budget management, including labor, equipment, and material costs, as well as managing vendor relationships. A commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices is essential. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success in golf course management, coupled with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster a positive and productive team environment. This position requires a strong work ethic and the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, to meet the demands of the golf season. Responsibilities: Develop and implement comprehensive agronomic plans for turfgrass management. Supervise, train, and mentor a team of groundskeepers and maintenance staff. Manage and maintain all irrigation systems to ensure optimal water efficiency and turf health. Implement integrated pest management (IPM) programs to control diseases, insects, and weeds. Oversee course conditioning, including mowing, rolling, and bunker maintenance. Monitor soil conditions, nutrient levels, and make appropriate adjustments. Manage the maintenance and repair of all grounds maintenance equipment. Develop and manage the annual operating budget for the grounds department. Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and environmental standards. Procure necessary supplies, equipment, and services from vendors. Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities, expenses, and inventories. Collaborate with golf professionals and club management to ensure course readiness for tournaments and events. Contribute to the long-term strategic planning for course improvements and renovations. Qualifications: Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of experience in golf course maintenance and management. Proven leadership and team management skills. In-depth knowledge of turfgrass species, soil science, and pest/disease management. Experience with irrigation systems and water management techniques. Proficiency in budget management and equipment maintenance. Strong understanding of golf course operations and playability standards. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and maintain a flexible schedule. GCSAA certification or other relevant professional credentials are a strong asset.
