About the position
The Head Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overall management of the golf course maintenance fleet. This position ensures all equipment is operating safely, efficiently, and at peak performance to support daily course conditioning goals. The Head Mechanic works closely with the Superintendent to uphold high standards of quality, safety, and organization.
Responsibilities
Maintain, diagnose, and repair all golf course maintenance equipment, including mowers, utility vehicles, tractors, sprayers, and small enginesEstablish and manage preventive maintenance programs for all equipmentMaintain accurate maintenance and repair recordsPrioritize and schedule repairs to support daily and long-term maintenance needsCommunicate equipment status and repair timelines to the SuperintendentEnsure proper setup, sharpening, grinding, and adjustment of cutting unitsMaintain a clean, safe, and well-organized maintenance shopTrain and assist staff on proper equipment operation and careManage parts inventory, ordering, and vendor relationshipsEnforce safety standards and proper use of personal protective equipmentAssist with equipment purchasing recommendations and evaluationsRequirements
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a golf course mechanic or similar roleTechnical training in small engine repair, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diesel/gas engines preferredStrong working knowledge of turf equipment brands and cutting unit setupAbility to read and understand technical manuals and schematicsExcellent organizational and communication skillsValid driver's license; CDL a plusStrong mechanical and diagnostic skillsAttention to detail and commitment to qualityTime management and ability to prioritize repairsProblem-solving and troubleshooting abilitiesLeadership and training mindsetAbility to work independently with minimal supervisionWork performed primarily in a maintenance shop and outdoor settingsExposure to noise, grease, chemicals, and varying weather conditionsAbility to lift up to 50-75 poundsStanding, bending, kneeling, and tool use for extended periodsNice-to-haves
